FAQs

What is an RCFE?

Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFE) are specifically for the elderly who are aged 60 and older, allowing them to maintain independence by providing room, board, housekeeping, supervision, and personal care.

What’s the Difference Between an RCFE and an SNF?

A skilled nursing facility provides medical services by licensed staff. An RCFE is based on a social dynamic regulated by Social Services to keep each resident as independent as feasibly possible. RCFE is not a medical facility.

Does Medicare pay for RCFE services?

Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFEs), sometimes called “Assisted Living” or “Board and Care,” are not licensed as medical facilities. Accordingly, neither Medicare nor Medi–Cal pays directly for care in RCFEs

Do medical insurance plans cover RCFE services?

RCFEs are not covered by most major medical insurance plans (not a medical model). Some Long-Term Care insurance policies do cover RCFE charges depending on the policy.
